EMT Courses

EMT is one of those medical courses that are in high demand in present age. EMT stands for emergency medical technician. A person who has emergency medical technician (EMT) certificate is a highly needed person in medical field. He is a person with professional skills to deal with emergency situations. An EMT is the first person who provides pre-hospital medical care or first aid until the patient can be transferred to the hospital. And this capability makes him the most needed person in medical field. EMT courses assess the competency of the candidates as a medical care provider.

There were certain reasons behind starting EMT courses. Sometimes it happens that patients or the people in need of immediate medical care cannot reach hospitals or other medical care centers. They might be in some area where these facilities are not available within reach, and they will have to travel a considerable distance to reach them. And may be the condition of the patient is too critical to wait for a doctor. EMT courses were introduced to train people to deal with such situations. Therefore the role of an EMT is very meticulous and critical. EMT performs different duties such as responding to emergency calls, performing some medical methods and transporting the patient to the hospital while keeping in mind certain precautions. They may work in ambulance service. They can also be a part of rescue teams or other departments such as fire or police department.

EMT courses train the EMTs to evaluate a patient's condition, and to perform such emergency medical treatments which are known as first aid. These courses teach EMTs to maintain a patent’s adequate breathing and cardiovascular circulation (blood circulation) until the patient can be transferred to a hospital or other appropriate medical care center for advanced medical care. Their training also include resuscitation (bringing back to consciousness), bracing of bone fractures, using electric shocks to deal with different irregular and dangerous activity of heart, preventing shock, in certain situations immobilization of patient’s body to prevent spinal damage, and taking certain measures to control external bleeding.

The people who want to choose EMT courses to train themselves as Emergency Medical Technicians have to possess certain abilities and qualities. A trained Emergency Medical Technician is supposed to deal skillfully with high-stress situations at regular basis. They must also have the ability to make appropriate decisions at the spur of the moment. If an EMT does not have the above mentioned capabilities, his/her EMT certificate is of no use and his passing the course will prove a fruitless effort. So it is highly recommended that only those people try to pass EMT courses that think they are capable and have the aptitude of dealing with such situations.

As for as the requirements for EMT are concerned, each state has its own specific guidelines as to how many classroom training hours an EMT course requires. The length and scope of EMT is decided by the level of certification the candidate wants. Besides theoretical learning, they are also required to complete practical experience of a specific length, working practically in an ambulance or in other hospital settings. EMT courses are based on in-person training as well as internet based training.
